EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI OF 13 JANUARY 2007 IN THE KURIL ISLANDS
On 13 January 2007, less than two months after the great earthquake of 15 November 2006, another great earthquake occurred off the east coast of the Kuril Islands. In spite of the quake’s large magnitude, only a relatively small tsunami was generated. A tsunami warning was issued in Japan and for a large region of the Western Pacific. A watch was issued for Hawaii, Alaska and the Northwest Pacific. Only a small tsunami was recorded or observed in Hokkaido, Japan, and at distant locations in the Pacific.
